Biography

Julie Johnson PhD, Deputy Secretary/Publicity, BSMT member since April 2009

Julie officially retired from UKHSA in June 2022 and is currently working as the UKHSA Head of Business Operations for Genomics on a bank contract.

Julie’s career includes significant experience in Microbiology and she has worked in all major disciplines of Pathology, the PHE Food, Water and Environmental Unit and was in technical charge of the London Toxoplasma Reference Laboratory. 

Julie worked for 11 years as the Laboratory Manager for Microbiology at St. George’s Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and has strong evidence of providing professional leadership and the management of change during the transition to South West London Pathology.

Julie’s PhD was based on “The Diagnosis of Toxoplasmosis in the Immunocompromised Patient”.  She is an honorary senior lecturer at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine teaching on the MSc course in Medical Microbiology and the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.  She has 45 publications in peer reviewed journals and 3 book chapters.  Julie also has significant experience of working in and collaborating with several laboratories throughout West and East Africa and has worked as the PHE in-country laboratory lead for the Ebola response in Sierra Leone.  Julie also represents the BSMT on the UK SMI Steering Committee.
